2014 Medal of Honor Recipients
In recognition for extraordinary acts of valor and heroism, the Idaho Law Enforcement, Firefighting and EMS Medal of Honor is awarded to law enforcement officers, firefighters and EMTs who have been distinguished by exceptionally meritorious conduct, assuring that the sacrifices of these professionals are recognized and their bravery honored by the state whose citizens they protect.
On June 7, 2014, the following individuals were recognized for their valor and heroism:
Captain Stuart Eigler
Sam Owen Fire District
On August 11, 2013, at approximately 12:30 am., Clark Fork Ambulance (housed at Sam Owen Fire Station 1) was called for a vehicle that had run off the road and into 24 feet of water in Lake Pend Oreille. Upon learning that a dive team would not be able to arrive for over 30 minutes, Captain Stuart Eigler took it upon himself to swim out 100 feet and dive down 10 feet (without any breathing apparatus) to search for the victim. Firefighter John Ryan O’Hearn
Pocatello Fire Department
On June 22, 2005, at approximately 3:30 p.m., the Pocatello Fire Department was dispatched to a house fire on East Elm Street. There was smoke billowing from the house, and upon being informed that there was a wheelchair-bound man still trapped inside, Firefighter John Ryan O’Hearn singlehandedly removed the victim from the smoke and heat charged environment and threat of certain death. Captain Jeff Piazza
Clark Fork Fire Rescue Department
On November 4, 2010, at approximately 4:00 a.m., Captain Jeff Piazza, of the Clark Fork Fire Rescue Department, responded to a mobile home fire, with the possibility of persons trapped inside. At the scene, bystanders informed Captain Piazza that the occupants’ two dogs were trapped in the crawl space under the burning mobile home. Due to the extended time the mobile home had been on fire, the floor joists were severely damaged, and it was likely the floor would collapse at any moment. Read more >>>
