Detective Joel Weinheimer
Pocatello City Police Department
On July 5, 2022, Detective Joel Weinheimer joined Officer Jordan Johnson responding to a call of a vehicle that was overturned and submerged in a canal. Both officers entered the canal where civilians on scene indicated someone was trapped inside the vehicle. Officer Johnson attempted to open the rear passenger door and break the window with a log and a baton, while Det. Weinheimer attempted to break the window with a hammer. The canal’s powerful current made the efforts ineffective. Det. Weinheimer was eventually successful breaking the windows using a knife fitted with a window punch. Det. Weinheimer reached inside the vehicle through the broken window and found a female subject who had been submerged in the water for several minutes and appeared to be unconscious. Officer Johnson assisted Det. Weinheimer in pulling the female free of the vehicle and transferred her to Emergency Medical Services. Due to their quick response time, decisive actions, and determined persistence to gain access the vehicle, the female who had been inside the submerged vehicle received lifesaving care and survived the accident.
Through indomitable courage, complete disregard for his own safety, and profound concern for the safety of others, Detective Joel Weinheimer showed great determination and bravery. Detective Joel Weinheimer’s extraordinary heroism and intrepidity, with danger to his own life above and beyond the call of duty, are in the highest traditions of Pocatello Police Department and Idaho law enforcement.
